Planning a Visit Around the New River Gorge's Signature Overlooks

For first-time visitors to the New River Gorge, the Canyon Rim Visitor Center is the natural starting point, offering the most accessible view of the gorge's namesake bridge and orientation to the park's wider trail system. From there, a short walk along the boardwalk trail leads to several overlooks with views of the bridge spanning the gorge nearly nine hundred feet below.

For visitors with more time, the Long Point Trail offers what many consider the park's most photographed vantage — a view of the bridge from below and to the side, framed by the gorge walls on either side. The trail is moderate in difficulty and typically takes a couple of hours round trip, making it accessible to most visitors without technical hiking experience.

Beyond the Overlooks

Below the rim, the gorge offers whitewater rafting through several outfitters based in Fayetteville, ranging from family-friendly upper gorge trips to more technical lower gorge rapids for experienced paddlers. Rock climbers are also drawn to the gorge's sandstone cliffs, considered among the best climbing destinations in the eastern United States.

Park rangers recommend visiting on weekdays when possible, since parking at the most popular overlooks can fill quickly on weekends during peak season. Those visiting in fall should plan for foliage season crowds, typically peaking in mid-to-late October, when the gorge's forested walls turn a range of reds and golds.
