Youth baseball leagues around Fairmont report growing registration numbers this spring and summer, reversing a multi-year decline that league organizers had grown concerned about in recent seasons. League administrators point to a combination of renewed volunteer coaching recruitment and refurbished local fields as factors behind the rebound, though they say broader post-pandemic normalization of youth sports participation likely played a role as well.

"We were genuinely worried a couple years ago that we'd have to combine age divisions because we didn't have enough kids," said one league administrator. "This year we actually had to add a division back."

Field Improvements Help Draw Families

Local youth sports advocates credit recent field renovation projects, funded through a mix of local fundraising and county recreation budget support, with making the leagues more attractive to families comparing options across multiple youth sports. Coaches say improved facilities have also made it easier to recruit volunteer coaches, since practices and games are no longer complicated by poor field conditions.

League organizers say they hope the participation rebound continues into future seasons, and are exploring additional outreach to reach families in outlying parts of Marion County who may not be aware of registration opportunities closer to town.
