Charleston Nail Salons Navigate Updated State Sanitation Standards
Charleston-area nail salons are adjusting to updated state cosmetology board sanitation guidance, with most owners saying the changes formalize practices already in place.
Nail salons across the Charleston area are adjusting to updated sanitation guidance issued by the state cosmetology licensing board this year, changes that most salon owners describe as formalizing practices they say were already common at reputable businesses. The updated guidance clarifies tool sterilization timing and documentation requirements, giving inspectors more specific standards to reference during routine visits.
"For salons that were already doing things right, this doesn't change much day to day," said one Charleston salon owner. "For salons that were cutting corners, it gives inspectors clearer language to point to."
Inspection Process Draws Mixed Reaction
Some smaller, independently owned salons say the added documentation requirements create modest additional administrative work, particularly for owner-operators without dedicated administrative staff. Larger salons with multiple technicians say the standardized checklist has made staff training more consistent, since new hires can be trained directly against a documented state standard rather than informal shop practices.
State board officials say the updated guidance reflects standard industry practice already used in many other states and is intended to protect both customers and licensed technicians, particularly given how frequently nail tools come into direct contact with skin. Inspections are expected to continue on their regular schedule, with officials saying the updated guidance is meant to clarify existing expectations rather than introduce a substantially new inspection regime.
