Clarksburg Awards First Round of Main Street Storefront Grants
Clarksburg's downtown revitalization program has awarded its first round of facade improvement grants to local business owners.
Clarksburg's downtown revitalization program awarded its first round of facade improvement grants this month, providing matching funds to local business owners willing to invest in storefront repairs and upgrades. City officials say the grants are intended to address a common barrier for small downtown businesses — the cost of exterior repairs on older commercial buildings that often exceeds what a small business can absorb on its own.
"A lot of these buildings are a hundred years old or more," said a city development official overseeing the program. "The bones are usually good, but the cost of bringing the front of the building up to a standard that attracts customers can be more than a small shop owner can manage."
A Model Borrowed From Elsewhere
City officials say the program is modeled on similar downtown grant efforts used in other small West Virginia cities, adjusted for Clarksburg's specific building stock and downtown footprint. Early grant recipients include a longtime hardware store, a newer coffee shop, and a professional office, reflecting a mix of legacy and newer downtown businesses.
City officials say they plan to open a second grant round later this year if funding allows, and are tracking whether the improvements lead to measurable increases in foot traffic or new business openings nearby.
