Morgantown Startup Incubator Reports Record Applicant Pool

A Morgantown-based startup incubator reported its largest applicant pool to date this year, a sign local economic development officials say reflects growing interest in the city's small but steadily expanding technology sector. The incubator, which offers mentorship and shared workspace to early-stage companies, said applicants this cycle spanned a wider range of industries than in past years, including healthcare technology, agricultural technology, and data services.

"We used to get mostly software companies," said an incubator program director. "This year the range was much wider, and a lot of it connects back to research coming out of the university."

University Ties Remain Central

University research and graduate programs remain a significant source of both applicants and mentorship for the incubator, reflecting Morgantown's position as the state's primary hub for research-driven startup activity. Program officials say they are working to expand connections between incubator companies and potential customers or investors outside the state, an area they describe as a persistent challenge for West Virginia-based startups generally.

Local officials say they view the growing applicant pool as an encouraging, if still early, signal that Morgantown's technology ecosystem is maturing, though they caution that translating incubator activity into long-term company growth and retention remains the harder test.
