New Cybersecurity Training Program Aims to Fill Statewide Workforce Gap

A new state-supported training initiative launched this summer aims to build a pipeline of cybersecurity workers for both government agencies and private employers, addressing a workforce gap officials say has grown more pressing as more critical infrastructure and public services move online. The program combines community college coursework with employer-sponsored internships intended to give participants practical experience alongside technical certification.

"Every agency and every utility we talk to says the same thing — they can't find enough qualified people," said a workforce development official involved in designing the program. "This is one of the few technology fields where West Virginia's job openings are arguably ahead of many other states relative to population."

Building From an Existing Base

The program builds on existing cybersecurity coursework already offered at several community colleges, but adds a more structured employer partnership component intended to improve job placement rates for graduates. Program organizers say they are prioritizing partnerships with public sector employers first, given the direct link between cybersecurity staffing and protection of government and utility systems.

Officials say they expect to expand the program to additional community college campuses if the initial cohort demonstrates strong placement outcomes, with results expected to be evaluated near the end of the year.
