Habitat Restoration Project Targets Ohio River Wetlands Near Parkersburg
A multi-year wetland restoration project along the Ohio River near Parkersburg aims to rebuild wildlife habitat lost to decades of industrial and agricultural development.
A multi-year wetland restoration project along the Ohio River near Parkersburg is underway this summer, aiming to rebuild wildlife habitat that conservation officials say was lost gradually over decades of industrial and agricultural development along the river corridor. The project involves reestablishing native wetland vegetation and reconnecting several isolated wetland pockets to improve habitat for migratory birds and native fish species.
"Wetlands along this stretch of the river have been fragmented piece by piece for a long time, not through any single event but through gradual development," said one conservation official involved in the project. "Restoration work like this is slow, and honestly a lot less dramatic than people sometimes expect, but it adds up over time."
A Regional Conservation Partnership
The project involves a partnership between state wildlife agencies, a regional conservation nonprofit, and several private landowners who have agreed to habitat easements along portions of the restoration area. Officials say private landowner participation has been essential, since much of the targeted wetland acreage sits on land that is not publicly owned.
Wildlife officials say they expect to begin monitoring bird and fish populations in the restored areas within the next two years, which will provide the first concrete data on whether the restoration effort is achieving its intended ecological goals.
